8 track tape vs cassette1/7/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() This is why backing up your cassette tapes with a digitized version is always recommended. Even if you tediously take care of your cassette tapes, one failed recording or “tape eating” can cause the entire cassette tape to be ruined. Two common factors for cassette tape deterioration are heat and tape recorder malfunctions. Whereas a CD stored in the same conditions can last over 100 years. Analog, inch wide tape, 3 in/s, endless-loop cartridge. 8-Track (Stereo-8) The inside of an 8-track cartridge. In perfect circumstances, cassette tapes will only last about 30 years if properly stored away from heat, humidity, and UV rays. A cartridge format for embedding and easy handling usual 3-inch-tape-reels with inch tape, compatible to reel-to-reel audio recording in 3 ips. We suggest playing your cassette tapes at least once a year to prevent the layers from sticking to one another. The binder coating can also get too “sticky” if the cassette tape is never used. 8-track tapes would enjoy their popularity throughout the 70s. Cassette at its best can do between 22kHz and 24kHz. The music industry deemed cassette tapes to be superior to 8-track tapes in every way and consu. The binder coating in cassette tapes, VHS, etc. 8 track at its best can get up to about 13kHz, but most units are doing well to make it past 10KHz. The two layers need to be attached for the magnetic signals to work in any magnetic recording device. Magnetic tapes are essentially bound together using a gelatin-like glue that holds together the thin taping and magnetic strip. In order to better understand why this is commonplace for magnetic tapes, it’s useful to understand how these tapes are made. Unfortunately, magnetic tapes such as cassette tapes are prone to deterioration, which is why you should always digitize your cassette tapes.Ĭassette tapes, reel-to-reel tapes, 8-track tapes, and VHS can all “go bad” because they are magnetic tape mediums. Whether your cassette tapes are decades old or brand new, there are important factors to consider for cassette tape storage and use in order to make the tapes last longer. The high fidelity may be great but these features come at a cost. Let's see what's next, this vintage trend seems to be here to stay.Do you have a bunch of old cassette tapes stowed away in your home? Cassette tapes are making a comeback in the music industry because of the sound quality and nostalgic characteristics they provide to listeners and music collectors. Perhaps it is a way to celebrate an artist from the Sixties with a tribute album made available on a medium of that era. ![]() Hence, which is the meaning of this weird production? Frankly, I do not know. Of course, spare parts are no longer available or are extremely rare. And if you're lucky to find one of those, it might need some serious repair. In order to play this Stereo 8 album you need, of course, a Stereo 8 player, which is not easy to find nowadays. The title-track, “Quello che conta”, had been written by Ennio Morricone (!!!) and Italian filmaker Luciano Salce for the soundtrack of the movie La cuccagna, and sung by Luigi Tenco in 1962. This project album has been crowdfunded on Produzioni Dal Basso. Italian alternative rock artist Ginevra di Marco has just released her new album (“Quello che conta”, What matters) in a limited quantity of Stereo 8 cartridges, with the help of Mirco Roppolo, the man behind The project album is a tribute to the Italian singer and songwriter Luigi Tenco: after his suicide (under still unclear circumstances), in 1967, he became an icon of love and despair. There was no rewind control, because of the design of its endless loop tape, which fed from the reel in only one direction. These were much less popular here in Europe.Īn 8-track cartridge contained four pairs of stereo tracks. Many US cars, at that time, were equipped with Stereo 8 cassette players. The Stereo 8 standard was created by a consortium led by Bill Lear (Lear Jet Corporation) together with Ampex (tapes), Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Motorola, and RCA Victor Records. Some swore by its better sound quality, when compared to Compact Cassettes. The only advantage of the Stereo 8 tape cartridge was that it wasn't necessary to flip it over to play the alternative set of tracks. It was a tape-based recording medium that was popular, especially in the USA, between the Sixties and the Eighties, surpassed in popularity by its natural competitor, the Compact Cassette, which was smaller and easier to use. Well, the Stereo 8 cassettes date back to the Sixties (1964) and were also called 8-track tape, eight-track cartridge, eight-track tape, or simply eight-track. I can hear you, younger readers, asking “Stereo 8 cassettes.what?”. Believe it or not, someone is releasing Stereo 8 cassettes as well. You might have already read, here on TNT-Audio, a couple of articles ( Part I and Part II here) devoted to the weird comeback of compact cassettes. ![]()

Boss katana 50 mk2 acoustic guitar1/7/2024 ![]() ![]() One suggestion I could make for improvement is that I see no need for the phones/recording out jack to defeat the internal speaker since there is an option with the main power control to turn the speaker off. Seriously – sometimes it’s the “little things” that make a product just right. I have used the Katana in a wide variety of gigs, from coffee shops to churches to cover band shows, and every time I’m impressed by its tone, portability, and versatility.Īnd it has a built-in kickstand. No, it’s not on par with an Axe-Fx or Kemper, but then again, those pieces of kit are in the +$2k range. While tone is obviously very subjective, I say without hesitation that the Katana 50 (and its big brother the Katana 100) are easily some of the best modeling amplifiers that I’ve ever heard. New options for the emulated output, global EQ, and cabinet resonance adjustments are also available.Įnough about that – how does this thing sound? It is a guitar amp after all. Reverb types included plate, room, hall, spring, and modulating.Īnd do make sure you update the firmware to v2 – you get expanded effects options (including some cool new effects like the Roland SDE-3000 and MXR Phase 90) including effects loop placement. Numerous delay effects are included: digital delay, SDE-3000, analog delay, tape echo, and modulating. ![]() Other effects include compression, EQ, limiter, octave, T-wah, and pitch shift. Mod effects include chorus, flanger, phaser, and tremolo. You’ll also find non-Boss overdrives such as Rat (Proco Rat), ’60s Fuzz (Fuzzface), and T-Scream (Ibanez Tube Screamer), so obviously there’s a bias towards Boss effects (not a bad thing), but the options are pretty massive. ![]() Numerous overdrive and distortion emulations are included, such as Blues Drive, Overdrive, Natural OD, Warm OD, and Turbo OD. Once you integrate the Tone Editor software, the effects options are opened up signifcantly. For example, you can design presets that use distortion and modulation effects simultaneously (not an option without the software). The Tone Editor lets you make presets that bypass some of the inherent limitations of the amp. While you can get a lot of mileage out of the Katana in its stock form, you want to make sure to incorporate the Boss Katana Tone Editor, which really opens up the options available for the Katana series. The “acoustic” setting turns the Katana into a dedicated acoustic amp (note: it’s not meant to make an electric guitar sound like an acoustic, though if you have piezo pickups built in (like on my Ernie Ball Petrucci), then this setting works really well. Rather than modeling specific amplifiers, the Katana has general options that capture the most common amp sounds that guitarist need clean, crunch, and lead, though there is an EVH-esque tone with the aptly named “Brown” sound. Engaging the Phones/Recording Out defeats the internal speaker. On the rear panel, there are Aux In, Phones/Recording Out, USB, and Foot Control input jacks. The main controls include a 3-band EQ, gain, volume, boost/mod selector, boost/mod level, delay/FX selector, delay/FX level, reverb selector, reverb level, tap tempo, master volume, power control, and channel selector. ![]() It is a single input amp with a 1×12″ speaker. There are five modes available: acoustic, clean, crunch, lead, and “brown” (their take on 80s rock tones). The Boss Katana 50 is a 50W combo amplifier with selectable power ranges from 50 to 1/2 watt. Let’s take a look at the Katana 50 combo amplifier to see this in action. With the Katana series, Boss ups the ante with the balance of quality and price. Sure, every year someone claims to have a new revolution in amplifier modeling, but let’s not forget that the folks at Boss/Roland started amplifier modeling years ago, so they bring some experience to the modeling arena. I don’t think I’m overstating the case when I say that the Boss Katana amplifier series fits that description. It’s hard not to see the Boss Katana 50 as a major player in the sub-$500 practice/small gig amp market.Įvery once in a while a product comes along that makes you rethink the entire genre. ![]()

End of rec 20071/6/2024 ![]() ![]() Hell (literally, I suppose) is still breaking lose inside as they attempt to stop this from getting out. When does the phrase "Nothing could possibly go wrong" ever be accurate? Taking place not seconds, but the moment the first Rec ended, the disease control and military break into the apartment complex of a viral outbreak to gather evidence and contain the situation. A demon possesses a girl the Catholics are frightened and assign a priest to run experiments to get a cure before Satan's minion infects others. Oh, is it a spoiler to say what it is since that's 98% of the plot? Fine, be warned, I'll continue. So, you've been advised: this review will contain a major spoiler.) It's getting more than clichéd to state: Be careful for what you wish for as I got what I wanted in Rec 2: the explanation of the previous films outbreak. It's stated almost immediately after this film, Rec 2, starts and is the central core of the movie. ![]() It was simply too hard (or I'm paid far too little) to work around the big "secret" of the virus of the original movie: Rec. (DISCLAIMER: I do put spoilers in my reviews, I'll admit, but hardly none as revealing than the following. It is a disgrace to movies worldwide when Hollywood decides to sink their greedy claws into a good product and milk it for what its worth. And I am sure this will also spawn a crappy Hollywood Americanized version of the movie, like the first "Rec" movie. ![]() And as such the movie experience is just a notch below the first "Rec" movie. The ending was very predictable and anti-climatic though. There were no major frights though, but there was a constant thrill and a sense of being stalked and feeling boxed it. But looking beyond that, the movie in its entirety came together as a good experience. Now, what I didn't like about "Rec 2" was the whole possession and Christian propaganda approach they had decided to turn the story to. The way the movie is shot works so well, it is like participating in a superb horror game. Again the camera work was amazing, makes you feel like you are right there in the middle of the chaos. The make up on the infected were good, and the effects were nice as well. Again, picking up the scenery and sets from the first "Rec" movie makes for a good scenery with a constant underlying sense of dread and claustrophobia. The characters in the movie were believable and well portrayed, especially because they have that every-day-man-and-woman feel to them, they are just like you and me. "Rec 2" picks up right where "Rec" left you when it ended. It's not quite up to the same quality, but it's worth checking out to see the interesting direction the story goes in.Ī somewhat nice continuation of the first "Rec" movie. REC 2 is basically more of the same, so if you enjoyed the first, there's no real reason why you shouldn't see this. There's also a slight feeling of repetition that comes with using the same location again, but that's understandable considering the direct plot continuance. Did that ruin the movie? No, but I definitely cared about the well-being and survival of these people less than those that came before. On the negative side, I did find the new characters introduced in this one to be almost universally unlikable and annoying. No complaints from me there, I enjoyed the expansion of the overall mythos and the added backstory/explanation for some of the people and events of the first film. REC 2 takes the supernatural elements of the first movie and further explores them, which sets it apart from some similar zombie-type films. This is a direct continuation of the original, and happens in and around the same apartment building on the same night. Not as cohesive or frightening, as the first REC (which is one of my favorite modern horror movies), but still a tense and thrilling horror ride, more often than not. ![]()

Breakaway pants fashion1/6/2024 ![]() ![]() “I mean, when you look at the ’90s, you had Heelys and rollerblades and Soaps Shoes. “The breakaway pants had this kitsch factor,” said Jian DeLeon, the senior male wears editor at WGSN. They’re athletic wear, but not for playing. In the ’90s, America discovered adidas breakaway – or tearaway depending on what part of the country you were from – pants. Every once in a while, the country would discover something so quirky it became bigger than its intended function. Different national regions had different interpretations of what we should look like or how music should sound or what technologies we should adapt to, but there were some trends that transcended geography with a different kind of ubiquity than what exists now in the Internet era. The movies and television and music of the era give us a snapshot of how things looked and felt and moved for 10 weird years. The decade is what nostalgia is supposed to be, and its influence is found oozing out of contemporary hip-hop and hoops culture. The ’90s feel like they happened forever ago. We were ostensibly Tulare’s tear away pants, and every once in awhile our coaches and teachers and parents wanted to tear us out of their lives, but as frustrating as it is, they kept buttoning us back up. We weren’t necessarily outcasts, but there were elements to the way we approached high school that were outcast-y. Ripping those pants off fit the general tone of our group - it was fun and whimsical and almost cool, but close enough to fit into the sub-culture it represented. “The captain of the chess team - Phillip Barnett.”Īs everyone laughed, I’d rip off my sweats and wave to the crowd that only existed in our minds. “Standing at 5-foot-9 and 27 pounds,” Davion would begin as I started to get off the bench. There were always intros before the games started, and no matter how hot it was, the intros included us in warm-ups so that we could rip off our adidas tear-away pants as someone from the other team made a terrible joke as he introduced you. If you happen to find yourself opening a dusty box in some dusty storage space in the dusty city of Tulare, pop in that VHS-C tape and rewind it all the way to the beginning. We’d go home, dirty as hell, and watch those tapes. We shot a lot of threes and tried to dunk on each other whenever possible. We all lived within three blocks of each other, and when the summer days didn’t peak over 110 degrees, we’d make the trek to Kahn, set up our Sony camcorder on a turned-over trash can and play the kind of basketball we learned from NBA Jam. Suffice to say there’s not much to do in Tulare, which is why, on that VHS-C tape, sitting in a box in a storage unit in Tulare, there is a grainy recording of Davion Bruce, Dhevin Williams, Fernando Gonzales and myself playing basketball on eight-foot rims at Frank Kahn Elementary school. The city’s claim to fame is that it hosts the world’s agricultural show every year and once landed on Forbes’ list of worst cities to raise a family. a city that sits right in-between Bakersfield and Fresno. There’s an old VHS-C tape sitting in an old box in an old storage unit somewhere in Tulare, Cali. ![]() |
